Martyn Cooper is by background a systems engineer having a B.Sc. in Cybernetics and Control Engineering with Mathematics. He has a broad engineering experience in Broadcasting, Computing and the Oil Industries. In 1992 he established “Technology for Disabled People”. This principally offered technical consultancy to care, health and education professionals and specific equipment recommendations for individuals with disabilities.
Martyn Cooper was:
- Director of Research: Technology and Disability in the Department of Cybernetics at the University of Reading from 1993-1998
- Research Lecturer, Multimedia and Enabling Technologies Group, Knowledge Media Institute, Open University from 1998-2001
- Senior Research Fellow (Accessibility in Educational Media (AEM)) Institute of Educational Technology, Open University from 2003-2015
Broadly his interests are in the applications of established, new and emerging technologies to enable and empower disabled people and the effective access to a wide range of technologies for disabled people. This covers a wide range of technologies, disabilities, ages and application areas. While at the Open University the emphasis of his work has was on access to education particularly where this is mediated by technology.
